Kurimata style Yanone
 | Signed - Sashu
Masamori (薩州正盛)

Yanone of this and similar shapes are known as rope cutters, however the
actual function of these arrow heads is arguable. |

Polishing a Japanese
Yanone (Arrowhead)
In early 2001 this
kurimata style Yanone was sent to Japan with
sword polisher Naoji Kurita,
for polish and shirasaya. As one might
expect this shape is difficult to polish,
requiring many
small stones. This yanone took three days to polish and has several
areas that made this more difficult. Mr. Karita is well known for his
Oshigata and he provides an original Oshigata for each polished blade.
The blade is signed on the left side
of each face, like many
kurimata style arrowheads. One side
is signed with the province: Sasshu (Satsuma),
and the other is the smith: Masamori. He was
working in the province of Satsuma (Today's
Kagoshima) during the Kyoho Era (1716-1735).
The links below show close up views of the
blade and the Oshigata, The blade was scanned and the hamon is hard to
see. In the near future I will add some digital photos so that the
hamon can be seen.
